Research "Lived Experiences of Registered Nurses as They Experience Lateral Violence in Magnet-Designated Hospitals.”

Posted over 3 years ago by ANA Staff

Dear registered nurse,

My name is Simone Bovell and I am enrolled in a doctoral program at the University of Phoenix. My research study for the doctoral program is titled

“Lived Experiences of Registered Nurses as They Experience Lateral Violence in Magnet-designated Hospitals.”

The purpose of the study is to understand registered nurses’ perceptions of lateral violence in magnet-designated hospitals. Lateral violence is a problem that affects nurses in the workplace. Lateral violence is often referred to as bullying, horizontal violence, and incivility in nursing.

Lateral violence involves unpleasant acts committed by one nurse on another. The acts can be covert or overt. These acts may include gossiping, sarcasm, rolling eyes in disgust, sneering, threats, physical abuse, withholding information, ostracism, isolation, setting up to fail, the pressure to overwork, undermining work, condescending communication, and belittling. Research studies have been done to understand lateral violence however, there have been limited studies done in magnet hospitals. The literature review did not reveal any study that was done to explore registered nurses’ perceptions of lateral violence in magnet hospitals. The results of this study may help to better understand nurses’ experience of lateral violence in magnet-designated hospitals.

Participation criteria include:

Registered nurses
Have experienced lateral violence while working in a New York State Magnet-designated hospital

I am seeking 10-15 registered nurses who experienced lateral violence while working in magnet-designated hospitals.

The zoom video interview will be conducted and the sessions will be audio recorded lasting for 45-60 minutes. You will be required to sign a consent form prior to participating in the study. Your participation will be voluntary, and you can decide to be a part of this study or not.  Once you start, you can withdraw from the study at any time without any penalty or loss of benefits.  The results of the research study may be published but your identity will remain confidential and your name will not be made known to any outside party.
